Because the pelvic floor muscles are hidden from view inside the pelvis, surface electromyography (sEMG) is an effective and evidence-based tool for direct measurement of pelvic floor muscle activity. This course will describe how sEMG is used for the evaluation of certain pelvic floor impairments. Physical and occupational therapists will gain insight into how sEMG is used in rehabilitation treatment of pelvic floor disorders and its efficacy at improving rehabilitation outcomes.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Basic Principles of Surface Electromyography
This chapter will explain the basic principles of sEMG measurement of muscle activity. Techniques of sEMG measurement of pelvic floor muscle function will be described and demonstrated.
2. Interpreting sEMG Data in Pelvic Floor Muscle Assessment
This chapter will explore factors that influence the measurement of muscle activity with sEMG. Participants will learn how to interpret sEMG activity patterns that are characteristic of different pelvic floor disorders.
3. sEMG Treatment of Pelvic Floor Disorders
Treatment of pelvic floor disorders using sEMG biofeedback will be explained in this chapter. The evidence supporting sEMG interventions will be summarized.
