Policies and procedures define expectations, responsibilities, and roles. They provide guidance that allows us to practice within the myriad laws, rules, and regulations that govern the healthcare industry. This chapter looks at the role of policies in our day-to-day activities and the importance of knowing how to use them.
2. Why Do I Care?
Policies are not meant to protect only the company. They provide significant protections for the people who work there. Policies define our roles and our actions based on various situations. Failure to follow policies can result in disciplinary actions and, even worse, patient harm and potential legal liability.
3. Real-World Examples
This chapter examines real events that resulted from not following organizational policies. Three case reviews will be done to help highlight the protections afforded by following policies.
