Is it safe to use manual therapy for older patients with impaired joint mobility? How effective is manual therapy for older adults? Sadly, manual therapy interventions are not used as frequently in this population, even in the absence of precautions and contraindications. At the end of this course, the learner will have a thorough understanding of impaired joint mobility of the extremities in the older adult. Not only will the learner be able to determine the appropriateness of manual therapy for elderly patients, but they will also learn about evidence-based interventions aimed at improving mobility. This course will provide a broader understanding of manual therapy.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Aging of the Musculoskeletal System
This chapter will discuss the physiology of aging as it pertains to joints. It is important to distinguish the normal aging process from pathology.
2. Joint Impairment and Pathology
This chapter will cover the various pathologies that can affect joint mobility.
3. Examination of Joint Mobility
This chapter will discuss the assessment of joint mobility. Prior to the implementation of interventions, it is important to determine baseline measures of joint mobility as well as appropriateness of interventions.
4. Evidence-Based Interventions and Prognosis
This chapter will discuss the current evidence regarding interventions for joint mobility impairment. This will include discussion about specific joint mobilizations that can be used in the elderly population. This chapter will also discuss adjunctive therapies used for improving mobility.
