Jan Davis, MS, OTR/L is an internationally recognized leader in providing clinical training for therapists working in stroke rehabilitation. Trained as an occupational therapist (OT) in the United States, Davis’ career has spanned several areas of healthcare. 1. Introduction to Course

This introductory chapter provides an overview of how to use this learning module, and presents the course workbook used throughout the chapters.

2. Introduction to Functional Treatment Ideas & Strategies

In this chapter Jan Davis provides the foundation for treatment strategy utilizing functional tasks taken from real life. She outlines each of the 5 stages of her approach beginning with Evaluation, through Clinical Reasoning, Establishing Goals, Preparing for Function and concluding with Functional Activities.

3. Evaluation

Exceptional skills in observation and evaluation, traits shared by master clinicians, can be learned and developed. The focus of this chapter is to establish a baseline for acquiring exceptional skills in clinical observation (both visual and tactile) during the interview and initial assessment. Watch Jan Davis as she initiates her treatment and follow along with her assessment of four stroke survivors.

4. Clinical Reasoning

With clinical reasoning the problem solving really begins! Identifying prognostic indicators, interpreting impairments and determining solutions to key problems identified are clearly presented and illustrated with patient videos. This chapter helps the participant learn to develop the most effective overall treatment program for their stroke survivor.

5. Establish Goals

This chapter continues to expand with clear, concise and effective ways to write treatment goals that meet the requirements of third party payers. In this chapter you will learn how to efficiently write goals that include the four necessary components: 1) Functional Outcome, 2) Patient Skill or Behavior, 3) Tools for Measuring, and 4) Time Frame.
